The Latest From Alexandria!

The latest death toll from this Morning Attack in Egypt stand at – at least 21 Dead and 79 injured.

In Conjecture to earlier reports by some news agencies stating that the Festive celebrations have been cancelled in Egypt and that the Pope will not pray the liturgy at St Marks Cathedral are incorrect. Bishop Jeremiah, Pope Shenouda’s III Secretary has stated on “Egypt Day” that all the festivities will still be celebrated as normal. The recording (In Arabic) can be found HERE.

Footage has emerged from inside the Church at the time of the explosion. The priest begins to yell – “Don’t be Afraid” repeatedly, Evident also in the video is the sheer force of the explosion as the Altar curtains sway violently from the impact.

Foreign governments have begun condemning the attacks in Egypt.

Australia’s Acting Foreign Minister Martin Ferguson released the following a short while ago!

The Australian Government utterly condemns the attack overnight against worshippers leaving a Christian church after a New Year’s mass in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria, reportedly killing and wounding dozens of people.

We deplore the loss of innocent lives during what should have been a joyful time, and extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragedy.

The Government calls for all those responsible for this heinous crime to be swiftly brought to justice.

The Australian Embassy in Cairo is in contact with Egyptian authorities in relation to any possible Australians affected in the attack. At this stage there are no reports of any Australian casualties.
