Coptic Church · History & Tradition

History of the Nile Valley Christians!

The Coptic Church was founded by St Mark the Evangelist who wrote the Gospel of St Mark. Hstory documents that St Mark entered into Egypt somewhere between 40-50AD

Furthermore, while it is debated many scholars agree that the 1st Epistle of St Peter was written by St Peter in Egypt in the year 43AD. As you can clearly see, the Coptic Church dates back nearly 2000 years and is worthy of being called the Oldest Church in the World!

Furthermore the Coptic Church is the centre of biblical prophecy. If we read Isaiah 19, we see how Isaiah prophesises that there will be an altar in the midst of the land of egypt, and a pillar will be at its border. This is definetly true today. St Marys Monastary is in the midst of Egypt exactly, and the pillar is the See of Alexandria. Thus we are known as the Church Of Alexandria.

As we can see, not only are we the oldest church by action, we have our origins 800 years before the birth of Christ. Let us be proud in our Heritage, for no church has prophecy attached to it!

Below are two brilliant Videos from Saint George and Saint Joseph Coptic Orthodox Church (San Jose Area, CA) which provide an overview of the church!
