Benefiting From The Nativity Fast!

How you begin and conduct your fast will largely determine your success. You have to plan to make your time with the Lord more meaningful and spiritually rewarding.

Set Your Objective

Why are you fasting? Is it just as a tradition of the church or Is it for spiritual renewal, for guidance, for healing, for the resolution of problems, for special grace to handle a difficult situation? Ask the Holy Spirit to clarify His leading and objectives for your prayer fast. This will enable you to pray more specifically and strategically.

Through fasting and prayer we humble ourselves before God so the Holy Spirit will stir our souls, awaken our churches, and heal our land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. Make this a priority in your fasting. Read the rest of this entry »

Exceedingly, Abundantly, Above All!

What if you could go to heaven and you would have all of your friends, all your family, boundless resources and unlimited time to do all your recreation activities, but God wasn’t there. Would you still want to go?

Heaven has been given as an incentive for those who follow after Christ, but the King is the thing.

“To the believer, Christ is the resurrection and the life. In our Saviour, the life that was lost through sin is restored,” Ellen White wrote in “The Desire of Ages.”

Life is full of chills and thrills that may seem fulfilling, but if we’re being honest, they are really temporary. My argument is simple—Jesus is better! He is more beautiful and more awesome. He is exceedingly and abundantly above all you could ever ask or think. Read the rest of this entry »

Being A Teenager In 2010!

Being a teenager can be rough, but altogether too soon we grow up and forget all about the trials and tribulations of this period. Life becomes more serious and we take on more responsibilities, and soon before long the only thing we remember about being a teenager is the fact that we were so seemingly carefree back then. But if life were truly so carefree, why do we now notice a desperate need to know more about adolescent psychology?

Becoming a teenager is a difficult time for anybody. Suddenly you are in the middle of nowhere – you know you are not a child anymore and nobody takes you serious yet as an adult. As you near adulthood you have to face increasingly complicated thoughts, feelings and relationships with other people. Responsibility also starts increasing and often the combined pressures of all these factors cause stress, anxiety and even depression. Read the rest of this entry »

Do Not React!

We must learn to not react. This is just a corollary of “turn the other cheek.” When somebody says something hurtful, or somebody does something hurtful, what is it that’s being hurt? It’s our ego. Nobody can truly hurt us. They might cause some physical pain, or emotional pain. They might even kill our body. But nobody can hurt our true selves. We have to take responsibility for our own reactions. Then we can control our reactions.

There are a number of different levels to this principle. On the most blatant level, if someone hits you don’t hit them back. Turn the other cheek – that’s the Lord’s teaching. Now, this is hard enough. But there is a deeper level still. Because if somebody hits you, and you don’t hit them back – but you resent them, and you bear anger and hatred and bitterness against them, you’ve still lost. You have still sinned. You have still broken your relationship with God, because you bear that anger in your heart. Read the rest of this entry »

The Church Of Angels!

It is a teaching of the holy Fathers that with the creation of the angels we have the emergence of the first Church. And it can be seen in the writings of the Fathers of the Church that the angels too are members of the Church. Moreover, God the Father is the creator of “all things visible and invisible”. Among the invisible are listed the angels, who sing in praise of God. In the book of Job this witness is preserved: “when the stars were born all the angels in a loud voice sang in praise of me” (Job 38,7).

Thus, before the creation of the sensible world there were angels, who sang in praise of God for the creation. And, to be sure, this means that the angels were the first to be created by God. Read the rest of this entry »

5 Ways To Trust In God!

1.       In 2 Corinthians 9:8, we’re told, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” Reading this carefully, we learn that God is able to make all things right. No matter how hopeless or futile a situation may be, if we understand this scripture we understand that God is able to take even the worst details of the worst situation and turn it into abounding grace. Why are we struggling with our pitiful attempts that continue to fail us when God is so fully capable of handling it so that we can “abound in every good work?” The answer to that is because we are cherry picking our trust in God. The Confusing Years Of Adolescence!

When we speak of spirituality whether it be of adolescents or any other age group of our Church, there are a few things that we must keep in mind. Orthodoxy is a way of living. Many of the Church teachings and the teachings of Christ Himself of necessity conflict with our world and society. Our Lord called Satan the Prince of the world. When we follow Christ, the King of Heaven, we are bound to conflict with the ruler of our world.

So we as Orthodox Christians are called to live in this world of sinfulness, not partaking of it, but rather separating ourselves from it by our spiritual and Christ-centered existence. This is a tremendous task. For those in the age group of adolescents some extra and special problems are imposed by our society. They are forced to fit into certain groups or categories and meet certain qualifications for acceptance. Read the rest of this entry »

Friendship Flowchart!

C.S.Lewis says friends are people that are travelling in the same direction, have similar aspirations and goals and encourage each other in attaining those goals. Friends are not people that pull you down, they’re not people who are jealous (though sometimes that happens). They are people who can handle your talents and gifts and help you to develop them with thoughtful advice and direction.

Genuine friendship means caring and concern and a desire to people develop – not jealousy and frustrating the other persons dreams and desires. Friendship is DOING and not just TALKING. Friendship doesn’t always expect something in return. Friendship is critisising only to build up the other party – there is such a thing as positive critisism and as a friend you should be able to accept this kind of help. The Value Of Patience!

My brethren, count it all, joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2-4)

Trials, the world’s oppression, take place with God’s permission. The issue is not trials per se, but our response to them. Properly received, trials reveal where our hearts are. They help to increase faith, which cannot remain static, but must grow or die. The Godly reaction to trials is joy and perseverance. Though difficult circumstances are from the Evil One, to be angry at circumstances is to be angry with God, who permits them. Sometimes, the only solution to our trials is patience — so let’s explore this! Read the rest of this entry »

Who Is Zaccheus Today?

Much of what I do in my ministry remains private. People tell me stories of pain and hurt that I will take to my grave. Many share personal shortcomings, seek relief from guilt, and ask for direction, trusting that I will never repeat what they tell me. Sometimes the stories humble me. Other times they inspire me to pray more. There are days I go home in tears because some of the stories break my heart.

If you walked in my shoes for a month, you’d know at least four things. First, you would know that there is a God. Second, you would know that there is a lot of hurt in our world and in our parish. Third, you would know that there is no way that one priest can get to all the people. Fourth, you would know that you could help in concrete ways if you invest time in people.

For instance, what if you knew that a devout member of our community was dying and did not have life insurance? Would you help them? Would you reach in your wallet and take out $100 and say, I’ll go without something so you can have a proper funeral? Or would you shake your head and walk away, and tell yourself, “Not my problem.” Read the rest of this entry »

A Practical Approach To Temptation!

When it comes to temptation, sometimes there are practical steps or activities  that we may do to avoid or alleviate the problem. If we are tempted by being in  a certain place or with certain people, we can obviously choose, if at all  possible, to not go to such a place or be with such people.

In the case of sexual temptation we need to stand in the truth that we know about God and about what is truly fulfilling as far as sexual activity is concerned. The fact that we can use scripture to help us when we are tempted has already been mentioned.

In John 8:32, Jesus says,

“You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Read the rest of this entry »

8 Ways To Deal With Stress As Teens!

Sometimes life gets pretty stressful. Many teens feel stressed around big moments in their lives like final exams, prom, applying to college, or the first day of school. Stress can be a pretty dangerous thing, because it clouds our judgment and can cause physical problems like illness. It can also get in the way of our spiritual lives by fostering anger or resentment toward God. Here are some ways to cope with stress:

1. Pray

There is nothing like getting closer to God in order to reduce stress. Sitting down and releasing all of your worries, anger, and other feelings to God can do a lot to lift off the burden of stress. Tell God about your circumstances and hand over all your burdens to him. The release of things into His hands does a lot to help you cope. Read the rest of this entry »

Christian Parenting in 7 Steps

Parenting a teenager is hard enough, but add in trying to be a Christian parent and the challenges become even greater. Parents today are dealing with issues that their parents never even thought about. As our society “advances” the pressures facing teenagers today grow, meaning that parents today have to take a different approach to raising Christian children.

Here are 7 ways that you can become a more effective Christian parent:

1.    Know Who You Are

Yes, you are an adult, and you may think you know who you are. You may know why you do the things you do, but do your kids? Take a good look at how you parent and why you make the decisions you do. Are your methods effective? What are your reasons behind your parenting actions? Knowing yourself a little better will help you treat your kids in a manner that is more effective for building relationships. Read the rest of this entry »

The Assumption of St Mary!

On this day, was the assumption of the body of our pure Lady St. Mary, the Mother of God. While she was keeping vigil, praying in the Holy Sepulchre, and waiting for the happy minute of her liberation from the bonds of the flesh, the Holy Spirit informed her of her forthcoming departure from this vain world. When the time drew near, the disciples and the virgins of the Mt. of Olives (Zeiton) came and the Lady was lying on her bed. Our Lord, surrounded by thousands and thousands of angels, came to Her. He consoled her, and announced her with the everlasting joy which was prepared for Her. She was happy, and she stretched out her hands, blessed the Disciples, and the Virgins. Then, she delivered up her pure soul in the hand of her Son and God, Jesus Christ, Who ascended her to the higher habitations. As of the pure body, they shrouded it and carried it to Gethsemane. So Inspirational!

I Showed this video to  my Sunday School Class this week and it was so well received that i had to publish it on this blog. Enjoy!

Pure Laziness!

Make every effort and be hard working, so when your enemy attacks you, he will find you busy away from him, not finding room for him in your heart. Being idle is fatal venom; it is the moth for virtue, and the mother of all heresies and the evil fantasies.

It is the virus of all evil and sin, which brings temptations and causes the vile thoughts. Laziness eliminates the strength of the soul and causes restlessness and rejection from the spiritual deeds, and it weakens the fervent worship, which results usually from putting off the fervent of the spirit and the earthly deeds, and forgetfulness of the beneficence of heaven. Jesus is Just way to Simple!

Maybe I’ve read too much fantasy or played too many video games, but this isn’t how I’d imagine a resurrection to look. If Jesus is going to raise someone from the dead, I expect them to be bathed in holy light; I expect a choir of angels singing a heavenly chorus; I expect the earth to quake and the stars to dim.

Instead, Jesus takes her hand, and she wakes. No elaborate incantations or intricate rituals, no long-winded prayers or solemn pronouncements, no supernatural voice or heavenly trumpets; he simply says “Little girl, get up!”

For her part, she doesn’t float to the sky and start speaking in tongues, she doesn’t strain at the bonds and convulse in her bed, sunbeams don’t blast from her body and send onlookers running; she simply gets up and walks around. Read the rest of this entry »

Music Videos!

Below is a wonderful “Food For Thought” article on Music Videos written by Anywyn Crawford an acclaimed rock music critic from the Age in Melbourne.

MUSIC videos are essentially advertising, but the clip for Katy Perry’s California Gurls, top of the Australian charts, is the most cynical bid for market dominance I’ve seen in some time. It’s a video underpinned by a marketing logic common to both soft porn and sugary food, where pleasure is a naughty indulgence in which a woman’s role is to facilitate the enjoyment of others. Peters Portrait!

“‘Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young you girded yourself, and walked wherever you wished: but when you are old, you will stretch our your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.’ And this He said, signifying by what death he would glorify God” (John 21:18,19). Such was the end reached by that denier and lover; elated by his presumption, prostrated by his denial, cleansed by his weeping, approved by his confession, crowned by his suffering.

This was the end he reached, to die with a perfected love for the name of Him with whom, by a premature forwardness, he had promised to die. He would do, when strengthened by His resurrection, what in his weakness he promised prematurely. For the needful order was that Christ should first die for St. Peter’s salvation, and then that St. Peter should die for the preaching of Christ.

Women in the Orthodox Church! Part 2

Women have their energetic and positive role in the Coptic Orthodox Christian Church. For example:

Ø  Those who wish to consecrate their life to God may become nuns. They play an important role in the life of families and their convents are spiritual centers for the people.

Ø  Abbesses have a leading role to attract, guide and raise many young women in the ascetic life.

Ø  Devoted virgins serve in various fields of church service. Others are ordained as deaconesses. Read the rest of this entry »

The 10 Lives of St Paul

1. Life of Dedication

“Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (Act 9:1-2)

Fear God, Honour The King!

In the 1st Epistle of Peter 2:17 we find this wonderful phrase which really evokes much thought as it really is the fundamental way any Christian should live his life!

  • I guess the 1st question we need to answer is how do we Fear God? Are we not supposed to love him? How can we have a close relationship if I am scared of Him?
    • These are all very valid questions, however they all arise because of a misunderstanding about what the Fear of God really is!
    • When the bible mentions the phrase Fear God, it means Fear him in reverence, in awe.
      • The Deacons says this in the Liturgy, “Attend to the Lord in awe and reverence”, Simply put attend in Fear!
  • Still what does this mean? A true Christian is the one who lives his life fearing that he will upset his Creator. Read the rest of this entry »

The Prayer Room

“He who is able to pray correctly, even if he is the poorest of all people, is essentially the richest. And he who does not have proper prayer, is the poorest of all, even if he sits on a royal throne.”
St John Chrysostom

Prayer is the elevation of the mind and the heart to God in praise, in thanksgiving, and in petition for the spiritual and material goods we need.  Our Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to enter into our inner room and there pray to God the Father in secret. This inner room means the heart, the core of our being.

The Apostle Paul says that we must always pray in our spirit.  He commands prayer for all Christians without exception and asks us to pray unceasingly.

Orthodox Christians engage in both corporate and personal prayer.  One’s individual prayer life is balanced with participation in the liturgical services of the Church where the whole community gathers for prayer and worship.
